Synopsis: Bastienne, a shepherdess, thinks her love, Bastien, has ditched her for another girl. She heads to her sheep for comfort but bumps into Colas, the village magician. She begs for his magical help to win Bastien back. Colas reassures her that Bastien's just been distracted by "the lady of the manor" and suggests playing hard to get. As Bastien approaches, Bastienne hides. Bastien boasts about his love for Bastienne, but Colas tells him she has a new lover. Shocked, Bastien asks for magical help. Colas recites a hilarious nonsense spell and declares it a success. Bastienne, enjoying the game, pretends to reject Bastien. He threatens suicide, but she couldn't care less. Eventually, they call a truce and reconcile. The trio sings a final song praising the magician.
